Joe Pickering is a truly talented makeup artist, working mostly within the vibrant London fashion scene for many well known brands and celebrities. He's worked with Luster from the very first event, and always provides us with amazing insider expert tips and the low down on upcoming trends.
Your make up career is quite varied, what type of jobs do you most enjoy?
Ahh difficult question, I really enjoy most jobs I do, no two days are ever the same. I get bored really fast so really for me its great to have a variety of things going on. I'd say I love working on my own shoots more than anything and hopefully seeing them get published at the end is always great, you can be a bit more creative when its for yourself.
What are you favourite beauty trends at the moment?
STROBING!!! Not necessarily a new trend, but I really love dewy skin that looks beautiful and fresh. It's such a great way of showing off your features and looks great on camera too.
Most overrated/least favourite trends?
Following on from the last question, heavy contouring! Don’t get me wrong, it can look amazing in an overly filtered photo on Instagram, but you look so weird walking around with these stripes on your face. I'm all for a soft bit of shape to show off your bone structure but it's so easily taken too far.
What is your number one piece of advice for women looking at their everyday makeup routine?
Take a step away from the mirror, nobody is looking at your face as close up as you do when you're putting on makeup. Also remember your skin changes so much, something that suited you when you first started buying makeup isn’t necessarily the right product for you now. Don’t be scared to try new things (sorry that was two pieces of advice!).
You’ve been a part of Luster from the beginning. What do you think makes a luster event special?
Apart from the prosecco and cake? It's so relaxed, at other similar events you are often being told what's wrong with your makeup by people wearing styles you would never want to try anyway. I really feel Luster caters to peoples individuality, recommending different products and allowing you to try different things that really suit you.
What are your top 3 favourite products from your kit?
My first would be my Hourglass primer, it’s the most amazing base for foundation and holds everything in place so well, I'm obsessed! My second is the NARS Optimal Brightening Concentrate, just beautiful to give really dewy finish to foundation.
My third favourite product would be my Becca highlighters, which come in powder liquid or cream form. I love these so much! Champagne Pop is probably my favourite colour but I love them all.
And finally, your career highlight so far?
Hmmmm oh this is hard, I've had some really fun jobs, I get to go to a lot of festivals to do makeup which certainly doesn’t feel like work. I really love working on my own shoots, more than anything being allowed to really just do what you want to do is always the most fun.
